The Stockholm Commute

In early August of last year, I began teaching at the International English School in Bromma (IESB).  Bromma is a suburb on the northwest side of Stockholm.  Since we live in Uppsala, this meant a rather lengthy commute for me everyday, but I quickly adapted to the commuter lifestyle and though my pace slowed as my belly grew, I so enjoyed my time at IESB.

Until October, we lived in apartment #3 in Uppsala, which was about a 15 minute bike ride from the train station.  Once we moved to our current apartment (apartment #4), I had a short 7 minute walk to the train station - so nice!

My mornings began around 4:15 in order to bike to the train station and catch the 6:10 train to Stockholm.  This early train was rather quiet and most people, including myself, dozed or listened to music on the 40 minute ride.  Once at Central Station in Stockholm, I would go down a level to the Tunnelbanan (t-bana or subway) to the third leg of my journey.  I rode the green line for 17 minutes to the Bromma stop, where I would then have a 10 minute walk up to IESB.  The commute home generally took a bit longer because I was traveling at a more popular commuter hour then and both the t-bana and trains tended to be full and a bit slower.  In all, my commutes to and from work were about 90 minutes each, when everything was running on time and I wasn't walking too slowly.

One definite benefit to this type of schedule... I was well prepared for the newborn feeding schedule when Toby arrived!  The nighttime functioning and lack of sleep wasn't nearly as bad for me as I expected  :)
